Upgrades at Helsinki Airport: Finavia, the Finnish aviation authority, is developing the airport in Helsinki, the capital. In early 2026, a new area will open at the airport, entirely designed as a "theme area" resembling a forest in the Schengen gates area (intra-European flights), inspired by Finland's natural beauty.

Additionally, new shops and a café will open in March 2026 in the new commercial area of the terminal, before border control. Among the shops are Scandinavian fashion, a snack kiosk, a new concept called "Pure - Taste of Finland," and the family-friendly café and restaurant, Picnic.

"Finland has been ranked as the happiest country in the world for the eighth consecutive time - one key factor behind the Finns’ happiness is the connection to nature. A piece of Finnish forest landscape will be built in the heart of the new commercial area, inviting visitors to explore before their flight. The forest will be surrounded by the new commercial complex and café, providing products and services that enrich the gate area," said Nora Immonen, Director of Commercial Services at Finavia Helsinki Airport.

According to a Finavia survey, one of the product categories that most interests passengers at Helsinki Airport is souvenirs and gifts, especially food products. When it comes to dining options, passengers are keen on Finnish flavors and healthy takeaway options.

"More than a million passengers pass through our airport each month, already served by about 50 shops and 50 restaurants and cafés. The customer experience at our airport is among the best in Europe," says Immonen.

Helsinki Airport was chosen as the commercial venue of the year in a local awards competition. According to an annual stakeholder survey commissioned by Finavia, the satisfaction of Helsinki Airport’s commercial partners with Finavia was rated 4.4/5 in 2024.
