Greece is preparing for a general strike in the public transportation sector this coming Wednesday, October 1st, including air traffic controllers who are expected to participate. If there are no last-minute changes, this will result in a 24-hour total shutdown of transportation and aviation in Greece, during a critical time for Israelis—the eve of Yom Kippur.

The Romanian airline TAROM is not taking any chances and announced today (September 29, 2025) the cancellation of its flights between Bucharest and Athens on October 1st and 2nd, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Flights RO273 and RO274 are canceled, as mentioned, both on Wednesday and Thursday.

The company statement did not specify whether passengers can get their money back, credit, or change the flight date, as announced by the Greek airline AEGEAN. TAROM has advised passengers to contact the company’s service centers.

What's happening in Israel?

The strike, as mentioned, will occur on the eve of Yom Kippur, October 1st, 2025. Air traffic controllers, along with other public transportation workers, are demanding changes in their employment conditions. Israeli airlines have not yet announced any special arrangements, although this is a particularly critical day for Israeli aviation, during which the airport will be closed to outgoing and incoming flights in the afternoon hours.

A check by PassportNews shows that on this day, 37 flights are expected to depart from Israel to various destinations in Greece, and another 30 flights are scheduled to land from Greece in Israel, all during a particularly busy period from 4:50 AM to 1:50 PM.
