The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced the commencement of a new AirTrain system at Newark Liberty Airport (EWR).
Costing approximately $3.5 billion, this new system will replace the existing AirTrain, which has been in operation since 1996 and is considered outdated and over capacity.
Scheduled to begin service in 2030, the modern system will have an increased capacity of 50,000 passengers per day, compared to the current 33,000, and will directly connect to the award-winning new Terminal A.
Part of a Comprehensive Development Plan
This project is a key component of the extensive development plan for Newark Liberty, which includes upgrades to terminals, infrastructure, an intuitive road network, and a more efficient taxiway system to reduce delays. Future plans also involve replacing the 52-year-old Terminal B.
During construction, the current AirTrain will continue operating most of the time, with only occasional shutdowns to avoid peak summer and holiday periods.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy emphasized, "Newark is our region’s gateway, and upgrading the AirTrain is part of our commitment to providing a world-class travel experience."
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O'Toole added, "This isn't just about replacing outdated infrastructure; it's about building capacity and reliability that will move millions of passengers in the decades ahead."
Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka mentioned that the project is also a local employment engine: "The project will bring equitable economic opportunities during both the construction and future operations."
New Technology and Additional Services
The new system is designed to be flexible and expandable to accommodate future passenger growth, which is projected to increase by 50% by 2040. Additionally, the authority is exploring autonomous shuttles to integrate into the airport’s transport system starting in 2026, alongside regular electric buses.
The new AirTrain will replace the existing 15-minute walk between the train station and Terminal A, offering a more direct and convenient transit option.
