The fatal accident occurred aboard the Arvia, a ship operated by P&O Cruises, a British cruise company operated by Carnival UK and owned by Carnival Corporation & plc.
According to the initial report from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), one member of the ship's crew has died in an accident. The official investigative body of the British government operating under the UK Department for Transport said the accident occurred in the ship's elevator system while sailing from Southampton to Tenerife.
MAIB also notes that the accident, which occurred earlier this week on Sunday, October 26, is under official investigation by the Bermuda Shipping and Maritime Authority, since the ship is registered under the Bermuda flag, and that MAIB is also a partner in the investigation.
At this time, no further details have been provided regarding the circumstances of the accident in the elevator shaft or the manner of death.
The Arvia is 345 meters long, weighs 184,700 tons, and has a capacity of 5,200 passengers and 1,800 crew members. It set off on its maiden voyage in 2022 and its home ports include Southampton (England), Bridgetown (the capital of Barbados), and St. John's (Antigua).
