Is It Worth the Calories? Our Annual Donut Parade Begins

With jam or chocolate, colorful sprinkles or whiskey cream and even poppy seeds, fried and baked, and even those by renowned chefs. We've tasted almost all of them, and here are the donuts we loved the most

Purim 2024 is characterized by exaggeration. If last year we thought the bar had been raised, this year it seems like it's been surpassed. Maybe it's due to the gloomy mood that demands more sweet carbs, but it turns out more and more small bakeries have joined this sweet frenzy, and the offering is wider than usual.

Still the Most ExcessiveRoladin

Roladin continues to put on a show every year, and their donuts certainly tempt - you can't take that away from them. This year’s collection includes 12 plump and beautiful donuts, some with new flavors, a mix of familiar classics with flavors inspired by the world of patisserie. Among the flavors: salty caramel popcorn donut / tropical mango and pineapple coulis donut / malabi with pistachio and rose / pistachio with Amarena cherries / amazing hazelnut donut.
We got hooked on the Coffee Royal donut that was caffeinated, creamy, rich with coconut praline, and provided us with a perfect coffee break in a single bite.

Price: 15-18 shekels for the extravagant. 8 shekels for jam
Final words: Roladin delivers a busy, designed, and tasty bite most of the times, and they are the prettiest donuts to bring for a toast.

The Best Jam | Pitsi by Haim Cohen

The pastry shop of Chef Haim Cohen receives quite a few compliments every holiday. This year as well, Pitsi manages to serve especially plump donuts without much show but with a magnificent dough and, mainly, a wonderful classic jam that felt like a bite of childhood and adulthood together. They also offer dulce de leche, chocolate, and colorful sprinkle donuts at Pitsi.
Price: 9 shekels.
Final words: Pitsi proves that jam is really the tastiest there is

We Found a Jam Competitor! | Mimi's Cinnamon Donut

Every year, Mimi manages to deliver excellent products for every holiday. Credit where it’s due, they're always accommodating desserts for the gluten-free and everything is still very, very tasty. Here too, Mimi offers gluten-free donuts that are truly delightful and plump, providing a decadent experience.
Our highlight was the cinnamon donut - a huge wow and in my opinion, even a serious contender to the classic jam - it's a combination of excellent dough and cinnamon - brown sugar that sent us to Spain with this churros donut.
Price: 8 for jam or cinnamon, 10 shekels for chocolate and dulce de leche
Final words: Sometimes less is more. Mimi proves it

Always Works  Shmo

Micky Shmo, like Roladin, is a dessert pro and knows how to deliver a product that works and is always tasty. This year’s collection of donuts combines classics and a bit of show, with a great dough that held up even the next day and prices that were reasonable. Our favorite was a donut filled with marshmallow cream and raspberry coulis. Other flavors: dulce de leche / Ferrero Rocher / Amarena cherries / Oreo / salted caramel / chocolate flakes, and of course, whipped strawberries.

Price: 7 shekels for jam and dulce de leche, 13 for special flavors

New and Surprising | Bread Bakery

Since the Bread Bakery in Rishon Lezion opened, it has been the talk of the town for its pastries. Pastry Chef Eden Nassim created a collection of donuts from rich buttery brioche dough, filled with a variety of fillings. Each donut is accompanied by a biscuit disk, chips, and crumble, making them tiny and tasty works of art but also a bit messy and inconvenient for devouring.
Among the flavors: Petit Beurre Cake donut / pecan and caramel donut / alfajores donut / pavlova donut / Ferrero Rocher donut / Oreo donut
Price: 17 shekels for flavored donuts, 6 shekels for jam and dulce de leche
Final words: Very rich and generous filling, donuts to bring to the office.
