Today (31.7.24), United Airlines became the first airline to purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for use at O'Hare International Airport (ORD). This is the fifth airport where the company purchases SAF for operational use after Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, and Amsterdam, where Emirates also operates with sustainable fuel.
United was the first company to set a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company has purchased more sustainable fuel than any other American airline in 2023.
SAF is an alternative jet fuel that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85% and can be used without needing changes to fuel systems or aircraft engines.
"This is what happens when innovation, leadership, and policy come together," said United President Brett Hart. "While the SAF market is still in its infancy, there is a huge opportunity today for airlines and policymakers to work together to support the ongoing growth of SAF fuel."
