The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that 88 out of 637 (13.8%) passengers and 8 out of 391 (2.1%) crew members aboard the Oceania Insignia ship of the Oceania Cruises brand have been infected with the norovirus.

The virus causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines (gastroenteritis) and usually leads to vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and possible low fever, muscle aches, and general fatigue.

According to the CDC, the outbreak was first reported on October 20, 2025, on a cruise that took place between October 16 and 27, 2025.

The main symptoms suffered by those infected were diarrhea and vomiting.

In response to the outbreak, Oceania Cruises, part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, has taken the following actions:

- Increased cleaning and disinfection activities in accordance with their outbreak prevention and response plan;

- Collected stool samples from cases of gastrointestinal illness for testing isolated sick passengers and crew members;

- Consulted on cleaning and disinfection procedures and reporting of sick cases;

- Remotely monitored the situation, including reviewing outbreak response procedures and ship cleaning procedures.
