An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Japan this morning (Sunday), according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was recorded approximately 126 kilometers east of the city of Yamada, in Iwate Prefecture, northeast of the country, at a depth of about 10 kilometers below the surface.

The quake occurred at 08:03 in the morning Universal Time (UTC), equivalent to late evening in Japan. The epicenter was in the open sea, a significant distance from the shore.

Earthquakes frequently occur in Japan due to its location on the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean, an area where tectonic plates meet, causing frequent seismic activity.
