This Morning: Powerful Earthquake in the World's Largest Island Nation

Indonesian authorities have reported a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake in and around Simeulue Island in Aceh Province, northwest of Sinabang; there are no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage

A strong earthquake was felt in western Indonesia this morning (November 27, 2025) at 11:56 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) near Simeulue Island in Aceh Province, northwest of the city of Sinabang. According to the official report of BMKG, the Indonesian Agency for Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics, the earthquake reached a magnitude of 6.3 at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 62 km northwest of the city of Sinabang. Authorities assured that there is currently no tsunami warning, but remind residents and visitors to the area to remain alert and monitor further updates.

According to BMKG, the earthquake was felt on Simeulue Island and nearby areas, but no casualties or significant damage have been reported so far. Local authorities are continuing to monitor developments and encouraging the public to follow safety guidelines in the event of further tremors.
