First in Paris: Urban Cable Car to Connect 4 Cities in 18 Minutes

France has launched Cable 1, a first-of-its-kind transportation project that will connect four cities in the Paris suburbs over a 4.5-kilometer stretch. The cable car will provide quiet, accessible, and fast transportation, with a frequency of less than 30 seconds between cars

The Île-de-France regional transport authority (Paris region and surrounding area) officially opened the first urban cable car in the region, Cable C1.

This is the first transportation project of its kind in the region, designed to connect the cities of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, Limay-Brevances, Valenton, and Carteaux and to improve access to major hubs. The line will stretch for 4.5 km, with five stations between Carteaux and Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, spaced 500 to 1,800 meters apart. The estimated end-to-end travel time is about 18 minutes, and each carriage offers 10 comfortable seats and is accessible to strollers, wheelchairs, and bicycles.

The project is an innovative transportation solution for the area's complex terrain, including railroads, main roads, and other urban barriers, and offers a frequency of less than 30 seconds between trains, seven days a week.

The stations and carriages were designed to be accessible to everyone while maintaining comfort and safety. The system will include real-time video surveillance, direct communication with the control center, natural ventilation, and partial transparency to protect residents' privacy along the route.

In the event of particularly strong winds, an emergency plan will be activated, including slowing or temporarily stopping the cable car, while alternative bus routes will be implemented to maintain service continuity. The system also includes an advanced backup system designed to ensure the safe evacuation of passengers in the event of a malfunction.

The garage and operational facilities will be located at the central station in Limay-Bravans, and will be designed to integrate into the urban environment, including green roofs and a solar system that will provide the station's electricity needs.

According to forecasts, the cable car will serve approximately 11,000 passengers per day upon opening, with passenger volume expected to reach 12,000 by 2030. The consortium of companies selected by Île-de-France Mobilités has committed to maintaining a minimum noise level, and the cable car's operation will be accompanied by regular tests along the route to measure noise levels.

The line will be operated by Transdev, which will also manage the bus lines in the area, as part of the expansion of public transportation services in the Paris suburbs.
