The US Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay reported a dead giant whale stuck in the bow of a container ship in the port of Gloucester City, New Jersey, USA.

Authorities began investigating the circumstances of the incident that occurred earlier this week, on January 4 at 11:15 p.m.

According to an official update from yesterday, January 8, by the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC), the official organization in the US for the treatment of distressed, injured or dead marine mammals, including whales, dolphins and seals, an autopsy to determine the cause of death is in plan, but it cannot be implemented until a suitable burial location for the body is found.

Accordingly, the MMSC is working with several local and state authorities to locate a suitable inland location to bury the whale's remains.

MMSC also updated that the whale's weight is estimated at 12-13 tons and its length is 7-9 meters.

Additionally, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Law Enforcement officially confirmed that it has opened a formal investigation into the case.
