We've already passed Christmas and New Year's Eve. But tomorrow (January 6th), the Greeks celebrate another holiday - which will also affect tourists throughout Greece.
The "Epiphany" marks the manifestation of God in human form, on January 6th every year, which is 12 days after Christmas. The holiday originates in Orthodox Christianity.
The holiday is celebrated significantly in Greece when many young people jump into the water (despite the cold) in a symbolic event following a cross thrown into the sea by the regional priest. According to belief, whoever catches the cross will have good luck for the rest of their life.
Alongside those jumping into the water, many boats are sent to sea as part of the ceremonial event, with fireworks on them and many believers celebrating the holiday.
And Why Is This Important to You?
The bigger significance for Israeli tourists in Athens and other parts of Greece is that all the stores and tourist sites will be closed all day, public transportation and ferries will run less frequently than usual.
However, if you are near the sea, a lake, or any body of water, you can experience the local event and join the celebrations.
