Yesterday (January, 19, 2026), a 20-year-old man was attacked by a shark at North Steyne Beach in Sydney. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Mercury Psilakis, a well-known surfer, died in the same area last September, under similar circumstances.

Following the incident, the local council announced that all beaches in the Northern Beaches area will remain closed today and tomorrow (January 20-21), with reopening to be considered later. In total, dozens of beaches will not operate until further notice.

Australian authorities called on the public to follow instructions, avoid going into the water during closure days, and stay updated on beach conditions through official channels.

The local community expressed great appreciation for the rescue forces, lifeguards, and surfers who were present at the scene and acted quickly to provide first aid to the injured surfer.
