Tragedy in the Philippines: Ferry Sinks, Leading to 18 Dead and 24 Missing

Ferry disaster in the Philippines. Yesterday morning (Monday, January 26, 2026), the ferry M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 sank with hundreds of passengers and crew members on board.  

According to the official announcement issued yesterday morning by the Philippine Coast Guard (Coast Guard Legal Unit Southwestern Mindanao), the ferry sank at around 1:50 a.m., approximately 2.75 nautical miles northeast of Baluk-Baluk Island in Basilan Province.

The official Philippine News Agency reports this morning that 24 passengers are still missing and the death toll has risen from 15 to 18 people.

It also reported that the ship carried 332 passengers and 277 crew members when it set sail at 9:20 p.m. on Sunday from the port of Zamboanga to Jolo City in Sulu Province, in the southern Philippines.
