Ground Accident: Wing Hits Tail of Plane on Way to Takeoff

The unusual incident occurred at Chicago Airport: an American Airlines plane on its way to take off for Los Angeles collided with the tail of a United plane on its way to take off for Honolulu. The FAA has launched an investigation into the case, similar to one that happened at Ben Gurion Airport about seven years ago

Another Ground Accident at Chicago Airport. The wing of an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 narrow-body aircraft struck the tail of a United Airlines Boeing 787 (wide-body) aircraft yesterday morning (09:50 local time).

The smaller American Airlines plane, flight AA1979, was on its way to the runway, scheduled to take off for Los Angeles, while the larger United Airlines plane, flight UA219, was scheduled to take off for Honolulu, Hawaii.

The passengers of both planes, who were returned safely to the airport, disembarked without injury. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, the FAA, has opened an investigation into the case to understand what caused the accident.

A similar incident occurred at Ben Gurion Airport in 2018, when the tail of a German airline, which no longer exists, Germanwings, collided with the tail of an EL-AL plane in the aircraft parking area. Like that case, no one was injured.
