Summary of 2024: Record High in Passenger Traffic at Athens Airport

While here we are summarizing one of the bleakest years in aviation to and from Israel, the neighboring and beloved country is breaking records.

Athens Airport publishes the summary data for 2024, showing that 31,854,761 passengers passed through the airport. This is an increase of 13.1% compared to last year, which totaled 28,174,245 passengers.

Dividing into international and domestic flights: for international flights, 22,432,510 passengers passed through the airport, an increase of 15.7% compared to 2023, when 19,391,099 passengers passed through the airport.

For domestic flights, in 2024, 9,422,251 passengers passed through Athens Airport, an increase of 7.3% compared to 2023, when 8,783,146 passengers passed through the airport.

The strongest months in Athens were, as every year, July and August, with 3.6 million passengers passing through the airport in each month for both international and domestic flights. The most significant growth over the past year by month occurred in March, with an increase of 20.1% in both international and domestic flights, and a 23.6% increase in international flights alone - indicating Greece's trend and plan to extend the tourist season.

And where does Israel fit into the picture? According to the Airports Authority's report, Athens was the destination to which more Israelis flew than to any other destination in 2024. In total, this amounted to 973,630 passengers, an increase of 23.41% compared to 2023. 

Counting all destinations in Greece and the Greek Islands, it was the country to which more Israelis traveled than any other destination in 2024. In total, 1,825,567 passengers flew between Ben Gurion Airport and Greece and the Greek Islands.
