Gastrointestinal Illness Outbreak Hits Luxury Cruise Ship, Dozens of Passengers and Crew Affected

Aboard the most luxurious ship in the industry: 21 passengers and 6 crew members fell ill on a Seven Seas Mariner sailing, according to reports from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports dozens of passengers and crew members suffering from diarrhea during a cruise on the Regent Seven Seas cruise line, one of the more prestigious names in the industry.

The incident occurred aboard the ship Seven Seas Mariner, which sailed between January 11 and February 1, 2026.

According to the CDC, 21 of 631 passengers (3.3%) experienced severe diarrhea during the cruise.

Additionally, six of 458 employees (1.3%) experienced the same symptoms.

The CDC also reports that in response to the outbreak, Regent Seven Seas and the ship's crew took the following actions:

- increased cleaning and disinfection activities in accordance with the outbreak prevention and response plan;

- collection of stool samples from cases of gastrointestinal illness for laboratory testing;

- isolation of sick passengers and crew members;

- consultation with the Vessel Sanitation Program regarding cleaning and disinfection procedures and reporting of sick cases;

The program remotely monitored the situation, including a review of the outbreak response activities and the ship's cleaning and disinfection procedures.
