Vietnam’s newest airline is making a bold entrance. Sun PhuQuoc Airways has confirmed an order for up to 40 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, a move that will form the backbone of its future long-haul fleet and help connect travelers worldwide directly to its island hub.

The announcement was made on the same day (February 18, 2026) as Vietnam's flagship airline, Vietnam Airlines, took a similar step, entering the manufacturer's narrow-body aircraft market with a 50-aircraft order for the Boeing 737 MAX.

Sun PhuQuoc airline plans to operate the aircraft from Phu Quoc International Airport, positioning the popular resort destination as a major gateway for international tourism. With the range and efficiency of the 787-9, the carrier will be able to fly nonstop to cities across Asia, Europe, and North America.

"Our partnership with Boeing establishes a strong foundation for building a world-class airline that operates in sync with the tourism and resort ecosystem Sun Group has developed," said Dang Minh Truong, chairman of Sun Group, the airline's Vietnam-based parent company. "We selected the Boeing 787-9 not only for its superior operational performance, but because it is the most suitable aircraft type to realize our vision of bringing Phu Quoc to the world and bringing the world to Phu Quoc."

The agreement, formally recognized at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., represents one of the largest widebody aircraft order ever placed by a Vietnamese airline. Senior government officials, including To Lam, attended the event alongside airline and Boeing executives.

For passengers, the Dreamliner is known for offering a noticeably more comfortable experience. The aircraft features oversized windows, improved cabin pressure, and better air quality, all designed to reduce fatigue on long journeys.

"We are excited to work with Sun PhuQuoc Airways as they join other global airlines in flying the 787 Dreamliner, which connects the most countries of any widebody fleet," said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 787-9's unmatched range, fuel efficiency and passenger comfort will give the airline flexibility to open new long-haul markets, lower operating costs and contribute to local tourism growth."

The timing reflects the rapid rise of Vietnam’s aviation sector. Air travel demand in the country is expected to grow faster than in any other Southeast Asian country over the next two decades, driven by tourism and economic expansion.
