Greece is getting ready to celebrate a holiday known as "Clean Monday" this Monday, February 23. On this day, the Greek Orthodox begin the 40-day countdown until Easter, a fasting period during which they are not allowed to eat meat.

The holiday, celebrated on the same day each year, also symbolizes the end of winter and the arrival of spring, although the weather does not always align with this intention.

What Does the Holiday Mean for Tourists?

On "Clean Monday," most businesses are closed, including various stores, so that the weekend that begins on Saturday becomes a "bridge" that lasts until Tuesday morning. Restaurants, cafes, and bars, including those in tourist areas, operate as usual.

Airports in Greece operate as usual during the holiday, as does public transportation. However, the latter follows the Sunday schedule with slightly less frequency.
