Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Rocks Northeastern Taiwan

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit off northeastern Taiwan, shaking Yilan County the hardest. The quake was also felt in Taipei, Hualien, Taoyuan, and surrounding areas

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook the waters off northeastern Taiwan at 12:37 p.m. Tuesday (February 24, 2026), according to reports from the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

The quake’s epicenter was located in the sea, roughly 16.9 kilometers east-southeast of Yilan County Hall, at a depth of 66.8 kilometers. Yilan County experienced the strongest shaking, registering a 4 on Taiwan’s 7-level intensity scale.

Other areas that felt the tremor included Hualien County, New Taipei, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu County, Taichung, Hsinchu City, and Miaoli County, all registering an intensity of 3, the CWA said.
