When was the last time you visited a theme park? If your answer sounded like “when I was a kid”, you’re in for a treat. The good news is that, today, not every theme park is about cartoon characters and rollercoasters. On the contrary, many of them are now built specifically to cater to the needs of grown-ups looking for tasty food, a little indulgence, and experiences that feel more curated than chaotic. If you like the idea of a park day but without having to stand in line for a spinning teacup, these places are worth a look.

Efteling, Netherlands

At first glance, Efteling looks like a classic fairytale park. However, spending a few hours here will definitely help you notice just how detailed and atmospheric it feels.

The landscaping is lush, the architecture leans heavily into European folklore, and the rides are surprisingly sophisticated.

Baron 1898, a dive coaster themed around a 19th-century mine, is intense enough for thrill seekers, while the Fairytale Forest feels almost cinematic at night. It’s polished without being overly commercial.

Tivoli Gardens, Denmark

Right in the heart of Copenhagen, Tivoli is the world's second-oldest amusement park, dating back to the 19th century. The park mixes gorgeous antique roller coasters with live entertainment programs, so it’s less about adrenaline and more about atmosphere.

There are concerts, ballet performances, and a surprisingly strong restaurant scene. At night, thousands of lights reflect off the lake, and the whole place feels romantic rather than frantic. You can ride a vintage wooden coaster and then sit down for a proper dinner with wine.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

If your idea of fun involves horsepower, this theme park is just what you need. Ferrari World is home to Formula Rossa, often billed as the fastest roller coaster in the world.

The park is sleek and modern, with simulators, driving experiences, and exhibits dedicated to Italian automotive design. It’s more about speed and engineering than mascots and parades.

Puy du Fou, France

Puy du Fou skips traditional rides almost entirely. Instead, it stages massive historical productions with thousands of actors, elaborate sets, and real animals. One moment you’re watching Roman gladiators in an arena, the next you’re in a Viking village. It feels more like a live epic film than a theme park, and it’s surprisingly immersive.

Therme Erding, Germany

For a completely different type of experience, Therme Erding blends waterpark energy with serious spa culture. There are slides and wave pools, but also expansive sauna areas, mineral baths, and adults-only sections where you can truly unwind. It’s less about rides and more about spending a full day drifting between relaxation and fun.

Therme, Bucharest

Therme Bucharest, set within Romania’s largest botanical garden, which counts over 800,000 plants, including 1,500 palm trees, can accommodate up to 4,000 visitors. The complex offers a full range of water and wellness experiences. Guests can enjoy 10 thermal indoor and outdoor pools, 4 mineral pools, 13 saunas, 16 water slides, an urban beach, and a variety of entertainment options, including more than 40 wellness activities.

Open year-round, Therme is a destination for every season. While the urban beach and some outdoor lounges are seasonal, the resort’s main attractions remain accessible throughout the year.

Theme parks have, without a doubt, grown up. Whether it’s historical spectacle, high-speed thrills, or spa-level relaxation, these destinations show that amusement doesn’t have to mean childish.
