Spring is, without a doubt, one of the best choices when it comes to choosing a season to go on an unforgettable train journey in Europe. Winter crowds are fading, the landscapes are coming back to life, and the weather is just right for a long and relaxing scenic ride. From snow-capped mountains to sparkling lakes, dramatic coastlines, and lush greenery, Europe’s rail network offers some unforgettable journeys that are just as exciting as the destinations themselves.

Here are five train routes that are guaranteed to turn the trip itself into the highlight of the journey.

Connecting Chur or St. Moritz in Switzerland with Tirano in northern Italy, the Bernina Express is often considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. During the ride, you will climbs high into the Alps, cross dramatic bridges and spiral through tunnels as the scenery shifts from icy mountain peaks to green valleys. The highlight is the famous Landwasser Viaduct, where the train glides across a stone bridge before disappearing into a tunnel carved into the mountainside.

In spring, the contrast between snow-covered peaks and fresh greenery makes the landscape even more striking, just right for an Instagrammable post.

Norway’s Flåm Railway is short but spectacular, running just 20 kilometers from Myrdal to the village of Flåm, descending from the mountains to the fjords.

What makes it special is the steep drop and the dramatic scenery, with the train passing roaring waterfalls, deep valleys, and rugged cliffs along the way. One of the highlights is the stop at the powerful Kjosfossen waterfall, where passengers can step outside to take photos.

Spring is an ideal time to visit because melting snow makes the waterfalls especially powerful.
