U.S. Embassy Issues Security Alerts for Americans in UAE and Kuwait

The U.S. government urges citizens in the UAE and Kuwait to stay alert, shelter in place if needed, and consider safe departure options amid rising regional tensions. "We urge all Americans to remain vigilant, follow local instructions, and review the latest guidance from the U.S. Embassy or Consulate"

The U.S. government continues to closely monitor developments in the Middle East. On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, authorities issued two separate safety advisories for Americans in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.

Limited Civil Flights, Restricted Airport Access

In the UAE, limited commercial flights are still operating, but airport access may be restricted to confirmed travelers, and cancellations could happen with little notice. Overland routes to Oman and Saudi Arabia remain open, although travelers must meet visa requirements. Americans subject to UAE exit bans cannot leave until cleared. The embassy advises checking the Dubai Police app or local stations for updates.

Kuwait currently has no commercial flights departing due to ongoing threats of drone and missile attacks. U.S. officials recommend overland travel to Saudi Arabia if conditions are safe. Travelers will need valid passports and visas, and the Saudi eVisa can be processed online in as little as two business days. Short-term transit visas are also available at land borders, but the embassy cautions against third-party services that may overcharge or fail to deliver.

For both countries, the U.S. mission stresses the importance of having essential supplies like food, water, and medications on hand and staying in secure locations if travel isn’t possible. Embassy and consulate services in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Kuwait City are suspended, with only limited emergency passport assistance available by appointment. Citizens can reach out via official email addresses or the Department of State’s 24/7 Task Force for urgent help.

"Do Not Take or Reshare Footage of Drone and Missile Incidents"

The advisories also warn against sharing or recording footage of missile or drone incidents, as UAE law prohibits spreading false or sensitive information and arrests have occurred.

"Do not take or reshare footage of drone and missile incidents or share rumors or false information; doing so is unlawful under UAE law and has resulted in arrests and prosecutions."

Americans are advised to keep communication lines open with family and friends and monitor official embassy updates via Smart Traveller Enrolment Program (STEP) or WhatsApp channels.

The U.S. government emphasizes that the safety and security of its citizens is its highest priority. “We urge all Americans to remain vigilant, follow local instructions, and review the latest guidance from the U.S. Embassy or Consulate,” the advisory notes.

In short, whether in the UAE or Kuwait, Americans are encouraged to plan ahead, know their departure options, and shelter in place when necessary, staying aware of the changing situation in the region.
