Authorities in Croatia have issued a series of red and orange weather warnings as powerful winds and dangerous sea conditions impact large parts of the country’s coastline. The alerts, published by DHMZ Državni hidrometeorološki zavod, remain in effect through March 20 and come with strong safety advice for both residents and travelers.
Red Alert for Coastal Regions
The highest level “red” warning has been issued for parts of the Adriatic coast, including the Velebit Channel and the Rijeka region. Authorities describe the situation as extremely dangerous, with a real risk to life.
Forecasts point to intense northeast winds, known locally as the bura, reaching gusts between 65 and 165 km/h. These conditions are expected to create very rough seas, with high waves and the potential for coastal damage.
Officials warn that maritime activity is especially risky. Sailing in these conditions requires significant experience and properly equipped vessels. Less experienced mariners are strongly advised to remain in port, as conditions can quickly become life-threatening. Ferry services are also likely to be disrupted or suspended.
In addition to the risks at sea, there is concern about damage along the coastline, including to infrastructure, as well as hazards from debris and strong gusts reaching populated areas.
Orange Alert Across Wider Areas
An “orange” warning, indicating severe but slightly less extreme conditions, has been issued for surrounding regions. These areas could still see strong gusts capable of causing damage, including fallen trees, broken branches, and flying debris.
Authorities say traffic disruptions and possible power outages cannot be ruled out. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, particularly in exposed coastal and mountainous areas where winds can intensify suddenly.
Officials are urging the public to stay updated with the latest forecasts and follow instructions from local authorities. People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially near the coast, and to remain indoors where possible during peak conditions.
The Italian Air Force National Meteorological Service has also urged Italians and tourists in the Toscana region to "take precautions", "keep up to date with the latest weather forecast" and "expect some disruption to daily routines and BE PREPARED for disruption to outdoor activities" amid an Orange wind warning that will end today, March 19, at 13:59 (GMT+2).
