According to the UK’s National Rail, a fire at a building near Glasgow Central caused the temporary closure of one of Scotland’s busiest train stations, triggering significant disruption for commuters and travelers alike.

Authorities were forced to shut down services across both the low-level and high-level platforms, including platforms 7 to 15.

Glasgow Central is expected to fully reopen at the start of service tomorrow, March 25, 2026. Entrances at Gordon Street and Union Street will stay closed amid the Glasgow City Council’s ongoing work on the affected building.

Rail operators serving the station, including Avanti West Coast, Caledonian Sleeper, CrossCountry, ScotRail, and TransPennine Express, reported a mix of delayed, cancelled, and revised services.

To ease the impact on travelers, the train operators have implemented a series of temporary measures. Tickets for affected journeys can be used on alternative services at no additional cost. TransPennine Express has also relaxed ticket restrictions for passengers wishing to defer travel to another day, and similar easements have been introduced by CrossCountry.

The fire highlighted the challenges of managing a major station during emergencies. Many commuters were stranded as they sought alternative routes, and rail staff worked throughout the day to maintain operations and provide information to passengers.

National Rail advised travelers to monitor service updates online and check with individual operators for alternative routes and travel options.

Passengers are asked to exercise caution. National Rail spokesperson: “We are closely coordinating with Glasgow City Council and all affected train operators to ensure passenger safety and minimize disruption. Travelers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.”
