Houston Paralyzed by Extreme Weather.

Beginning at midnight (between Monday and Tuesday, January 21), all outgoing and incoming flights at Houston's three major airports—George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), William P. Hobby (HOU), and Ellington Field (EFD)—will be suspended due to severe weather conditions.

The decision to halt operations was made to prioritize the safety of passengers and crews amid forecasts of heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and icy road conditions. These extreme weather conditions are expected to persist for over a day, with significant improvements anticipated only by Wednesday afternoon as temperatures gradually rise.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) announced: "To ensure the safety of our passengers and staff, we decided to halt all flight operations starting midnight. We ask the public not to try to reach the airport after this time."

William Hobby Airport (HOU) also released a similar statement: "Due to dangerous weather conditions and forecasts of snow and ice formation, air operations will be halted starting midnight. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines to check for flight change options."

Both airports noted that ground crews will be working around the clock to clear snow and clean the runways, hoping to resume operations as soon as possible, depending on weather improvements.

The National Weather Service (NWS) also issued severe weather alerts for conditions expected to persist for over 30 hours. Extreme cold with temperatures dropping to 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 to -9 degrees Celsius) was reported, along with snow storms, winds, and dangerous ice formation on roads.

Meanwhile, public transportation services in the city are expected to face widespread disruptions, with all bus services being suspended starting today at 9:00 p.m. (U.S. time) due to anticipated weather conditions and road hazards. Train lines will operate on a reduced schedule, with many changes in timetables and routes.

Passengers who planned to fly from Houston airports are asked to contact their airlines to check for changes, cancellations, and alternative options. The airport management warns against arriving at airports after midnight due to severe weather conditions and recommends keeping updated through airline websites or service centers.

As mentioned, resumption of operations is expected only after improvement in weather conditions, anticipated by noon on Wednesday.
