Due to Protests and Security Risks: UK Issues Travel Warning for Parts of Mauritania

The UK warns against travel to parts of Mauritania due to protests and security risks near borders, urging caution. British citizens should avoid all demonstrations

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against "all travel to areas east of a line drawn between but excluding the towns of Kankossa, Akhreijit, Ghallaouia, Zouerat, Fderîck and onwards west to the border with Western Sahara."  The warning comes amid "periodic protests in Mauritania relating to developments in the Middle East" and the risk of "demonstrations" which "can take place with little or no warning."

Mauritania-Mali Border 

Travelers are advised to steer clear from all areas located within a 25-kilometer radius from the Malian border in the south. the warning also includes Khabou.

Mauritania-Western Sahara Border 

The FCDO also advises "against all but essential travel" to areas within 25km of the Western Sahara border. The warning excludes "the section of the Nouakchott-Nouadhibou road" as well as Nouadhibou.

Additional Warnings

The ministerial department has also issued a warning against "all but essential travel" to the rest of the province of Tiris Zemmour, Assaba, Hodh el Gharbi, Gorgol and Guidimaka, along with areas of Adrar and Tagant provinces, excluding:  

-areas west of a line running between Choum, Ouadane and where the 10th Meridian West meets latitude 18° 40° 

-Ouadane 

-Tidjikja-Tichit road 

-Aleg to Tidjikja road through Moudjeria

-all areas of Tagant west of that road 

-Bogue to Kaedi road through Bababe

The British Embassy in Nouakchott is not able to offer in-person consular services in person. Nationals are advised to get in touch with the British Embassy in Dakar, Senegal instead and to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, closely monitor local media updates, and accurately follow advice from local authorities.
