The new European Union Entry and Exit System (EES) has begun operating in Greece and will apply to all third-country nationals entering and exiting the Schengen area.

The system was gradually implemented at the external borders of European countries, starting from October 12, 2025, including Italy in January, and is now fully operational for all relevant passengers in Greece. The system aims to replace the traditional passport stamping method and improve the supervision of passenger movement.

As part of the new system's activities, personal and biometric data, including fingerprints and a facial image, will be collected and recorded for travelers arriving for a short stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

In the initial implementation phase, the system is expected to extend border control inspection times, which could cause significant delays in passenger traffic at airports.

Following the latest updates, passengers departing from Greece are advised to arrive at the airports at least two and a half hours before the scheduled departure time, in order to complete the check-in, security and passport control processes on time. Late arrival at the boarding gate may result in denied boarding.
