London Luton Airport has completed a major £18 million ($23.7 million) runway upgrade project to improve runway durability and performance and enhance the airport’s long-term safety and operational efficiency.
The complex project was carried out over approximately five months, using only night work, to minimize impact on airport operations. A team of approximately 120 professionals participated in the work, which was conducted following an extensive planning period.
The work was carried out every night between midnight and 05:45, and was completed before the first flight took off that morning. Each shift involved over 120 tools and vehicles, with close coordination between the airport's operations, the control tower, and other safety, engineering, and security teams.
As part of the project, the runway was also extended, more than 1,000 halogen lighting fixtures were replaced with energy-efficient LED lighting, and a new weather sensor was installed to improve forecasting capabilities.
