The European Commission has announced it is ready to launch a new age verification app designed to protect children online.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called it an innovative European solution that will allow users to prove their age when accessing digital platforms, in order to prevent exposure to harmful, illegal or unsuitable content for minors.
The open-source app, which will allow age verification using a passport or ID card, while maintaining complete anonymity for users, is compatible with any device. Countries outside the European Union will also be allowed to use the app.
The Commission noted that several EU countries are already considering integrating the application into their national digital identification systems and called on additional countries and technology companies to join this effort.
The initiative comes against the backdrop of the increase in the amount of time children spend online and the growing concern about exposure to bullying, harmful content, and attempts at harm by criminal elements.
The European Union emphasizes that the move is part of a broad policy to strengthen children's safety in the digital world, while placing their protection above commercial considerations.
