Following the 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake in Japan: Increased Risk of Strong Earthquakes in the Coming Week

Precautionary megaquake alert: The magnitude 7.7 earthquake (originally measured at 7.5) that impacted the north eastern and the northern parts of Japan on Monday, April 20, 2026. could be followed by a series of strong earthquakes in the coming days. 

The FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) has issued an important update, warning British citizens in Japan regarding the "precautionary megaquake alert" published by the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA).

"There is an increased risk of strong earthquakes occurring in the coming week. Residents and tourists in Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki and Chiba should remain vigilant and follow guidance from local authorities," said the FCDO.

The agency also advised nationals to keep a close eye on local news for any updates and consult the JMA leaflet on how to prepare for a megaquake and stay safe.
