Two Danish trains collided head-on on a level crossing north west of the capital city Copenhagen at around 6:30am local time (04:30 GMT), according to police spokesman Tim Simonsen. Local media reports quoting medical officials say at least five people have been critically injured, while 12 others sustained minor injuries.

The two trains were traveling on a line that connects the towns of Hillerød and Kagerup in the North Zealand area

In a Facebook post, Mayor Trine Egetved, of Gribskov Municipality, where the collision took place, said some of the injured were flown to the hospital by helicopter.

"This morning at 06:30, two trains on our local rail have collided on the stretch Helsinge-Hillerød around Hillerød (by Isterødvejen). At the moment, it says that there are many injured, some of which are critical, and they have been flown to the National Hospital.

I am deeply shaken and shocked and my thoughts are with all those involved The local track is used by many Gribskov citizens, employees and students. Emergency services are working at full pressure, and we are trying from the central team to get an overview of what has happened more accurately and make sure that everyone gets the help they need."

The incident is even more dramatic given the country's well-known safety record in terms of train crashes, with the last one in 2019 when eight people tragically lost their lives and injured 16 others.
