London City Submits Request to Operate Airbus A320neo at the Airport.
Airport authorities recently submitted a request to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which, if approved, will allow Airbus A320neo aircraft to operate at the airport.
The move aims to support sustainable growth of the airport and reach the maximum permitted passenger capacity with fewer flight movements.
According to airport management, the introduction of A320neo aircraft will enhance the offer for tourists, as the aircraft can carry over 180 passengers depending on the seating configuration and reach a range of more than 1,000 kilometers – allowing access to most parts of Europe.
It should be noted that London City Airport (LCY) received approval to expand from 6.5 million passengers to 9 million passengers annually by the English Department for Transport. The airport will also be able to add 3 flights in the early morning hours on weekdays.
The small airport includes only 15 gates spread across two terminals, and in 2023 served only 3.4 million passengers, compared to 79 million passengers passing through London’s Heathrow International Airport (LHR) that same year.
Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, stated: “The ability to introduce the A320neo aircraft to the airport is very exciting. It will allow us to expand our range of destinations, support economic growth without increasing the number of flights, and accelerate the transition to a new, cleaner, and quieter fleet.”
It should be reminded that the capital of England, London, boasts six main commercial airports: Heathrow Airport (LHR), London Gatwick Airport (LGW), London City Airport (LCY), London Luton Airport (LTN), London Stansted Airport (STN), and London Southend Airport (SEN).

London City Airport is located in east London, close to the Docklands area.
The airport is mainly known for its proximity to the city center and the Canary Wharf business district, making it desirable among many business people, primarily in the UK.
London City Airport is preferred because of its proximity to central London, both by European tourists coming to the capital of England and by British businesspeople flying to European centers. 'London City' offers flights to various destinations around the UK and Europe, including flights by major airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, and KLM.
The airport's short runway limits the types of aircraft that can operate there, currently mainly serving relatively small aircraft for short flights within Europe.
British airport executives focus on improving sustainability, operating quieter and more environmentally friendly aircraft, and continue to expand in response to growing demand.
