Earth Shakes in Nevada: 4.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Tonopah

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake hit the area near Tonopah, Nevada on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake occurred at 05:39:52 (UTC+03:00), roughly 77 kilometers northeast of the city, at a depth of 7 kilometers.

USGS mentioned the earthquake had a DYFI intensity level of III and a ShakeMap rating of IV, which suggests light to moderate shaking was felt in nearby areas. Also, the PAGER system, which is used to offer “fatality and economic loss impact estimates following significant earthquakes worldwide”, assigned the quake a GREEN alert level, indicating a low likelihood of significant damage or casualties.

Seismic Activity in Nevada

The area around central Nevada is known for its frequent low-to-moderate seismic activity due to ongoing movement along fault systems in the Basin and Range Province.

Since the 1840s, Nevada has witnessed more than 20 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater, including a 7.1 earthquake in Fairview Peak in 1954, followed just 4:20 minutes later by a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Dixie Valley.
