Photo: RVillalon / Shutterstock Aena Group, the largest airport operator in the world in terms of passenger volume, has today, May 12, 2026, made a reassuring announcement: its airports in Spain "handled 28.3 million passengers in the month of April, a 3.7% increase over the same month in 2025".
The growth, nonetheless, suggests a lower rate than the 6.3% increase achieved between April 2025 and April 2024, added the group, which currently manages 46 airports and two heliports in Spain and also holds stakes in 16 other airports in Europe and America via Aena Internacional.
The Madrid-headquartered group, with a focus on safe, sustainable airport management, passenger experience, and commercial services, has also confirmed that a sign warning passengers to exercise caution in relation to the Hantavirus had not been placed at Tenerife South Airport.
"We confirm that at Tenerife South Airport no sign like the one appearing in the image has been installed, it is a hoax."
The sign that showed up on social media read, among others: "Access prohibited for companions and passenger pick-up", "Comply with the established health measures at all times. Remember that you may be fined or denied boarding.", and "The use of a mask covering the nose and mouth is mandatory."
