An apartment building on James-von-Molke-Straße in Germany's easternmost town, Görlitz, opposite to the Polish town of Zgorzelec, collapsed on Monday afternoon (May 18, 2026), prompting a large-scale emergency response as authorities continue searching for missing residents. The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation.

"The rescue operation and, in particular, the search for the missing persons are ongoing. According to current information, they are two women, aged 25 and 26, of Romanian nationality, and a man, aged 48, of German and Bulgarian nationality," said the Görlitz police.

The police also warned about "significant traffic disruptions" expected throughout the city of Görlitz "until further notice", advising travelers heading towards Poland to use alternative routes via Radmeritz, Hagenwerder, and Ludwigsdorf.
