Summer travel demand is soaring

Summer 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest seasons ever for United Airlines. The U.S. carrier said it is seeing a significant jump in demand for flights tied to major international events, including the total solar eclipse in Europe, international football tournaments and major concert tours by leading global artists.

According to the airline, more than 53 million passengers are expected to fly with United between June and August, an increase of about 3 million compared with last summer.

In addition, Memorial Day weekend, considered the start of the summer travel season in the U.S., is expected to be one of the busiest periods of the year, with about 3.9 million passengers traveling between May 21 and May 27 and around 5,000 flights per day.

One of the main demand drivers is the total solar eclipse set for August 12. United says bookings have jumped by more than 50% for destinations along the eclipse path, including Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, Reykjavik and Nuuk in Greenland. The airline operates flights to 35 destinations located within eclipse-viewing areas.

Major summer sports events are also having a significant impact on the aviation market. United says bookings are up nearly 20% for cities hosting international football matches across North America in June, including Los Angeles, Toronto, San Francisco, New York, Houston, Dallas and Mexico City.

Concerts and music events are also continuing to drive demand. According to the company, bookings to Amsterdam have risen around a major concert series taking place in the city from mid-May to early June, alongside additional growth in flights to London ahead of major performances scheduled there at the end of July.

Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of global network planning and alliances at United, said:
“בין אם נוסעים כדי לצפות בליקוי חמה, לעודד את הנבחרת שלהם או לראות את האמן האהוב עליהם בהופעה חיה, המטרה שלנו היא לספק חוויית טיסה נוחה ופשוטה שתאפשר להגיע לכל אירוע משמעותי בעולם".

Alongside the rise in demand, United is continuing to expand its passenger experience services. The airline said more than 800 aircraft are already equipped with personal entertainment screens featuring Bluetooth connectivity and access to content from Apple TV, HBO Max, Peacock and Spotify.

In addition, Starlink high-speed internet service is already active on part of the airline's regional fleet, and United plans to expand the service across its entire fleet by the end of 2027. Passengers also have access to pre-order meal options, expanded overhead bin space for carry-on luggage and an upgraded company app that includes real-time baggage tracking, security wait times and wayfinding for connecting passengers inside airports.

It should also be noted that alongside the surge in demand, United Airlines has suspended its flights to Israel until September 7, 2026.
