Summer travel demand is surging

Summer 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest seasons ever for United Airlines. The U.S. carrier said it is seeing a significant jump in flight demand around major international events, including the total solar eclipse in Europe, international football tournaments, and concert tours by some of the world’s biggest artists.

According to the company, more than 53 million passengers are expected to fly with United between June and August, an increase of about 3 million compared with last summer.

In addition, Memorial Day weekend, considered the unofficial start of the summer season in the U.S., is expected to be one of the busiest periods of the year, with about 3.9 million passengers between May 21 and May 27 and roughly 5,000 flights per day.

One of the main demand drivers is the total solar eclipse set for August 12. United says bookings have jumped by more than 50% to destinations along the eclipse path, including Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, Reykjavik, and Nuuk in Greenland. The airline operates flights to 35 different destinations located in eclipse viewing areas.

Major sports events are also having a significant impact on the aviation market this summer. United says it has seen nearly a 20% increase in bookings to cities hosting international football matches across North America in June, including Los Angeles, Toronto, San Francisco, New York, Houston, Dallas, and Mexico City.

Concerts and music events are also continuing to drive demand. According to the airline, bookings to Amsterdam have risen around a major concert series scheduled in the city from mid-May to early June, alongside additional growth in flights to London ahead of major performances there at the end of July.

Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of global network planning and alliances at United, said: "Whether travelers are flying to witness a solar eclipse, cheer on their team or see their favorite artist live, our goal is to provide convenient flight options and a seamless travel experience, making it easy for them to get wherever they want go around the world," said Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President, Global Network Planning and Alliances. "With the largest global route network, and the most flights across the Atlantic and Pacific, we're connecting customers to the moments that matter most this summer."

Alongside the increase in demand, United is continuing to expand its passenger experience services. The airline said more than 800 aircraft are already equipped with personal entertainment screens featuring Bluetooth connectivity and access to content from Apple TV, HBO Max, Peacock, and Spotify.

In addition, Starlink high-speed internet service is already active on part of the company’s regional fleet, and United plans to expand the service to its entire fleet by the end of 2027. Passengers also benefit from pre-order meal options, expanded overhead bin space for carry-on luggage, and upgrades to the company app, including real-time baggage tracking, security wait times, and guidance for connecting passengers inside airports.

It should also be noted that alongside the rise in demand, United Airlines has suspended its flights to Israel until September 7, 2026.
