Crisis in Santorini: Strongest Earthquake Yet as Warnings Extend to More Islands

Residents flee the island in fear as seismic activity intensifies. Last night, a 5.1-5.2 magnitude earthquake - the strongest yet - struck the region. Schools on additional islands have been closed due to concerns over continued and escalating tremors

An emergency meeting of the Greek government, attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was held yesterday (5.2) following the ongoing earthquake crisis in Santorini. According to experts present at the meeting, it is not possible to estimate how long the tremors will continue.

Last night, the strongest earthquake in recent weeks was recorded, since the disturbing series of tremors began. The earthquake's magnitude was between 5.1 and 5.2.

Despite estimates that the latest earthquake caused property damage, it is still too early to determine due to the mass departure of residents. According to Greek media reports, about 11,000 out of 15,000 residents left for neighboring islands and the capital, Athens.

Warnings Expand

As part of the preparations going forward, and without a clear knowledge of how long the series of earthquakes will continue, Greek Civil Defense Minister Vassilis Kikilias announced that classes will also be canceled on islands close to Santorini - Mykonos, Paxos, and Paros until next week.

The average number of earthquakes since the beginning of the week increased from 200 a day to almost 300 a day. As we published earlier this week, most of them are of very low magnitude, but some are felt strongly in Santorini and neighboring islands.
