Tragedy in Hungary: One Dead and Several Injured in Explosion at MOL Olefin Plant

A blast during restart operations at MOL’s Tiszaújváros facility in Hungary killed one worker and injured several others

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Mahayr has announced that a serious industrial accident occurred this morning, May 22, 2026, at the MOL Group Olefin-1 facility in Tiszaújváros, during a restart operation following scheduled maintenance work.

According to preliminary information from the site, an explosion took place while the plant was being brought back into operation. Emergency responders confirmed that one person has died and seven others have suffered serious burn injuries.

The PM reported that, "there is currently a torch-like burn on the damaged pipeline", and the Mobile Laboratory for Disaster Prevention has arrived at the site to perform measurements.

"So far, the concentration of hazardous material has not been measured."

Additional updates will be provided by the Minister of Economy and Energy, Captain István and Zsolt Hernádi, the President-General of MOL, who will arrive at the site shortly", added the PM.

Magyar also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a full recovery to those injured in the blast.
