Spanish health authorities have confirmed a new positive hantavirus case linked to an already-monitored outbreak cluster, according to updates published by the Health Minister.

The ministry stated that the infected individual was already under preventive quarantine and clinical surveillance at Hospital Central de la Defensa Gómez Ulla as part of ongoing epidemiological monitoring following the initial detection of the outbreak.

Officials said the case was identified through periodic PCR diagnostic testing conducted on close contacts monitored under Spain’s Early Warning and Rapid Response System (SIAPR).

"The case corresponds to a close contact identified within the epidemiological follow-up activated after the initial detection of the outbreak."

Following confirmation of the positive result, the patient was transferred to the hospital’s High-Level Isolation Unit (UATAN), where specialized medical supervision and biosafety protocols remain in place.

Spanish authorities emphasized that the new diagnosis does not change the overall public health risk assessment for the general population and does not require additional epidemiological measures beyond those already activated.

According to the World Health Organization's latest update provided by Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, there are currently 12 cases and three deaths reported to the organization.

"No additional deaths have been reported since May 2. All passengers and crew remain in quarantine and under close monitoring to ensure they receive care if needed. The situation is stable for now. We continue to remain vigilant and in close contact with all relevant governments."

Hantavirus infections are rare viral diseases typically transmitted through exposure to infected rodents or contaminated environments. Health authorities continue monitoring identified contacts linked to the outbreak while maintaining preventive isolation and testing protocols.
