London mayor Sadiq Khan is urging residents to take precautions as an amber heat-health alert remains in place, following updated guidance from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
The alert, which has been extended until Thursday, May 28, now covers South West England in addition to South East England and central regions. Authorities are warning that sustained high temperatures could pose risks, particularly for vulnerable groups.
Watch Out for These Symptoms
"As the amber heat health alert continues, I’m urging Londoners to follow UKHSA advice. Stay safe in the heat and look out for those who may be more vulnerable," said the mayor on social media.
City officials are encouraging Londoners to follow UKHSA advice, stay hydrated, and look out for people who may be more susceptible to heat-related illness, including older adults, young children, and those with existing health conditions.
Officials stress that heat exposure can escalate quickly, especially during prolonged outdoor activity or in poorly ventilated spaces.
Symptoms of heat-related illness can include dizziness, headaches, nausea, fatigue, and confusion. In more severe cases, individuals may experience dehydration or heat exhaustion, which can require urgent medical attention.
Authorities are reminding the public to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours, seek shade where possible, and keep indoor spaces cool. Drinking plenty of water and limiting alcohol consumption are also recommended measures.
The amber alert level indicates that significant impacts on health and daily life are possible, particularly if vulnerable individuals are exposed for extended periods. Health officials continue to monitor conditions closely and may adjust guidance if temperatures remain high.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official UKHSA channels and local weather forecasts as the situation develops.
