The National Museum of Art (MUNAL) in Mexico City has announced that it will remain closed until further notice due to circumstances beyond its control.

In a statement shared on its official channels, the museum apologized for the inconvenience and advised visitors to follow updates regarding the resumption of normal operations. The institution did not provide further details about the cause of the closure.

The announcement is even more surprising, as just a few hours prior to it, the museum had launched an invitation to visit in June, offering a full schedule of upcoming exhibitions, conferences, and special events. "Your date with art is at the MUNAL! We're waiting for you with an agenda full of exhibitions, workshops, conferences, and special openings for all audiences."

Located in the historic center of the capital, MUNAL is one of Mexico’s leading cultural institutions, averaging roughly 500,000 visitors per year.

One year ago, in June 2025, various museums across the city made similar announcements regarding their closure until further notice. Nonetheless, the museums, part of the National Institute of Anthropology and History network, rapidly resumed their normal operations.

The closures were then explained through the switch from the Auxiliary Police of the Ciudad de Mexico to a private security company.
