India’s aviation sector is poised for a major transformation in 2025 with the launch of three new airlines - Shankh Air, Air Kerala, and Alhind Air - each set to enhance connectivity, foster competition, and expand flight options for passengers nationwide.

Shankh Air, based in Lucknow, the capital of India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, plans to commence operations by May 2025. The airline is currently in the final stages of obtaining its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Initially, Shankh Air will operate a fleet of five Airbus A320-200 aircraft, with ambitious expansion plans to grow to 15 aircraft by 2026. Although the airline initially considered Boeing aircraft, it ultimately opted for Airbus A320ceo jets, likely due to cost efficiency and better availability.

The venture is backed by Chairman Sharvan Kumar Vishwakarma, who has committed $50 million, with an additional $200 million investment from its parent company, Shankh Trading Pvt. This financial backing will support both the airline’s domestic launch and its planned international expansion in 2027.

Meanwhile, Kerala - an important aviation hub in India - is set to welcome two new airlines: Air Kerala and Alhind Air.

Air Kerala, based in Kochi, is scheduled to begin operations by mid-2025. Supported by a consortium of Dubai-based entrepreneurs, the airline is reviving a 2005 initiative that was previously halted due to regulatory challenges.

Operating a fleet of ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft, Air Kerala aims to improve connectivity between smaller cities and towns across Kerala and southern India. The first aircraft is expected to arrive by March or April, paving the way for a swift launch.

Alhind Air, backed by the Alhind Group - a company with an extensive international presence and over 130 offices worldwide - brings significant experience and resources to the Indian aviation market.

The airline plans to commence commercial operations by mid-2025 with two ATR 72-600 aircraft and aims to expand to seven aircraft within its first year. Kochi will serve as its primary hub, with plans to gradually extend its network to other key cities in southern India.

The arrival of Shankh Air, Air Kerala, and Alhind Air marks a major milestone for India’s aviation sector, addressing the growing demand for improved regional and international connectivity. These new airlines are expected to introduce competitive fares, enhanced service quality, and expanded route options - benefiting travelers across the country. With these developments, 2025 is shaping up to be a landmark year for Indian aviation.
