A tense hostage situation was reported on Tuesday (June 2, 2026) in downtown Bakersfield, California, after police responded to reports of a bomb threat at a Chase Bank branch and discovered an armed standoff involving multiple people inside the building.
According to the Bakersfield Police Department, officers were called to the Chase Bank building at the corner of Chester Avenue and 17th Street at approximately 1:00 p.m. (8:00 PM GMT) following reports of a bomb threat.
During the initial investigation, authorities determined that an adult male had barricaded himself inside the building with several community members.
"The Bakersfield Police Department received a call at approximately 1:00 p.m. regarding reports of a bomb threat at the Chase Bank building located at the corner of Chester Avenue and 17th Street," police said in a statement, adding there were no reported injuries.
Officers quickly established a security perimeter around the bank and nearby businesses while some occupants were able to evacuate safely.
Police said crisis negotiators remained in contact with the suspect by telephone throughout the incident.
In a later update issued at 9:02 p.m. local time on June 2 (04:02 AM GMT, June 3), authorities confirmed progress in the negotiations.
"We remain on scene at the Chase Bank building and have negotiated the release of a second hostage. There are currently no injuries reported."
The department also urged the public to stay away from the area as the operation continues.
"Avoid the area as this remains an active scene. We will continue to provide updates as information becomes available."
Road closures remain in effect around the bank. Authorities have not released additional details about the suspect or the number of people still inside the building.
The situation remains active as negotiators continue efforts to bring the standoff to a peaceful conclusion.
FBI Sacramento has also announced that they have been made "aware of the crisis in progress near the corner of 17th Street and Chester Ave. in Bakersfield, California, and are sending resources to assist. Please avoid the area."
