New York City officials are urging residents to prepare for possible flooding as heavy rain is forecast to impact the city between June 6 and June 7, 2026.

The warning was issued through Notify NYC, the city's official emergency notification system, which advised New Yorkers to remain alert and be ready to move to higher ground if flooding develops.

"During periods of heavy rain causing flooding, move to higher ground. If in a basement, move to a higher floor. If you must travel, use caution," the alert stated.

Officials are particularly concerned about residents living in basement apartments, ground-floor homes, and neighborhoods that have experienced flooding in the past. Emergency management officials stressed that people should not wait until water begins entering their homes before taking action.

The city is encouraging residents to sign up for emergency alerts through Notify NYC and review evacuation plans in advance. Authorities also recommend preparing emergency supplies, including medications, flashlights, portable phone chargers, and important documents stored in waterproof containers.

Act Immediately

"If a Flash Flood Warning or Flash Flood Emergency is issued, act immediately: Move to a higher floor right away. Do not wait to see water," the guidance states.

Travelers and commuters are also being advised to exercise caution. Officials warned against driving through flooded streets or entering flooded subway stations, noting that conditions can change rapidly during intense rainfall.

"Turn Around, Don't Drown," the city said, emphasizing that even shallow floodwaters can be dangerous. According to emergency guidance, just six inches of moving water can knock a person off their feet, while one foot of water can sweep away a vehicle.

Following any flooding, residents should avoid standing water, stay out of flooded basements, document property damage, and wait for official clearance before returning to affected buildings.

City agencies will continue monitoring weather conditions and are encouraging residents to keep emergency alerts activated as the storm system approaches.
