Passengers traveling to and from London Stansted Airport experienced disruption on Tuesday morning, June 9, 2026, at approximately 6:45 a.m. after engineering works near Hackney Downs railway station overran due to unexpected technical issues.
According to Greater Anglia, the train operator that offers commuter and inter-city services from Central London to Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and parts of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, disruption began when scheduled engineering works failed to finish on time because of an unforeseen problem with a rail weld.
The issue affected several key routes, including services between London Liverpool Street station and Stansted Airport, as well as routes serving Cambridge North, Hertford East, Bishop's Stortford, and Meridian Water.
Greater Anglia later confirmed that the welding problem had been resolved and all lines had reopened.
"Regrettably, we were informed of an engineering work over-run due to unforeseen issues with a weld. The issue with the weld has been remedied and all lines have reopened," the operator said.
Disruptions Continue
Despite the reopening of the railway, passengers continued to face disruption throughout the morning. Greater Anglia warned that some services could still be cancelled, delayed, or altered at short notice while normal operations were restored.
The disruption had a direct impact on travelers heading to and from Stansted Airport, one of the UK's busiest airports, as rail services linking the airport with central London were among the affected routes. Airport passengers were advised to allow extra travel time and check the latest service information before departing.
To help affected customers, Greater Anglia arranged ticket acceptance on alternative transport options, including London Underground services between Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters and other reasonable routes at no additional cost.
Recovery efforts continue, with residual delays and cancellations expected until train movements returned to their regular timetable.
Greater Anglia and Network Rail apologized to passengers for the disruption and reminded eligible travelers that compensation may be available through the Delay Repay scheme.
More engineering work between Liverpool Street to Cheshunt is scheduled for late night/early morning onlythrough Thursday, June 11, 2026.
