Eight pilots and flight crew members were killed in the crash of a B-52, the famous bomber in service with the United States Air Force.
It is still unclear what led to the serious incident, which occurred at Edwards Air Force Base, located about 150 kilometers from Los Angeles.
In a special message of condolence posted on social media, the US Air Force Materiel Command said: "From the AFMC Commander: It is with great sadness that we can confirm the tragic death of eight of our teammates today at Edwards AFB following the crash of a B-52 Stratofortress. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones."
