The Thessaloniki Metro project continues to progress at an accelerated pace, with the new "Kalamaria" extension, which includes five additional stations, expected to open to the public by the end of July 2026. This was announced by Greece's Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Dimas, during a working visit to the metro depot complex in recent days.
According to the Minister, in recent months there has been a significant acceleration in work at all five new stations, with most of the systems already installed, tested, and in operational condition. However, he emphasized that the completion of several final works and additional tests is required to ensure the system operates fully and safely.
To complete the work, the Thessaloniki Metro will be shut down until June 19. Until this date, necessary tests will be carried out and a number of other approvals required to advance the line expansion will be obtained.
The extension of the line to Kalamaria is one of the main projects in Thessaloniki, alongside a massive €3.4 million airport extension project aimed at significantly reducing carbon emissions and electricity consumption.
The extended metro line is expected to improve accessibility between the city center and the southern neighborhoods. The minister noted that upon completion of the project, the focus will gradually shift to planning and constructing additional extensions of the metro.
