Romania's Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) has warned that any suspension of air navigation services provided by the Romanian Air Traffic Services Administration (ROMATSA) could pose a major national security risk, potentially affecting European air traffic, the country's supply chains, as well as NATO operations.

The warning follows a ruling by the Bucharest Court of Appeal in February 2026 that suspended ROMATSA's certificate as Romania's sole air navigation service provider for 30 days. The case was brought by 12 air traffic controllers who allege discrimination in the company's hiring practices.

According to the Presidency, the court's decision is not final or enforceable, meaning ROMATSA will continue to operate while the legal process proceeds.

However, CSAT said that any interruption to ROMATSA's activities would create a "major systemic vulnerability" for Romania's air space, forcing the rerouting of critical European air corridors.

The council also said such a disruption would damage Romania's credibility as a regional security provider within EUROCONTROL and negatively affect commercial, cargo and emergency aviation, with wider economic consequences and disruption to strategic supply chains.

As a result, CSAT instructed the Romanian government and the relevant authorities to identify solutions that would ensure the continued provision of air navigation services and the security of Romania's airspace.
