Heavy monsoon rains continue to raise flood concerns across Bangladesh, with authorities warning that several rivers remain above danger levels and localized flooding could occur with little warning in the coming days.

Affected Areas

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre's latest update issued on July 15, 2026, three monitoring stations on three rivers in three districts are currently flowing above their respective danger levels. These include the Teesta River at Tarapur in Gaibandha district, the Kushiyara River at Fenchuganj in Sylhet district, and the Someshwari River at Kalmakanda in Netrokona district.

The warning comes as flash floods and landslides continue to affect parts of Bangladesh, including the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Cox's Bazar, and the Sylhet region. Authorities have also highlighted an increased risk of seasonal flooding in northeastern Bangladesh, particularly in Sylhet, due to heavy rainfall during the pre-monsoon period.

Transport, Utilities, and Services Could Be Affected

Officials warned that flooding can occur with little warning and may disrupt transportation, utilities, and access to services, especially in low-lying and river-adjacent communities.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre noted that a low-pressure area has formed over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and the adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal coastal region. The weather system is expected to move west-northwest over the next two days and cross north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal.

However, authorities said water levels in the Manu, Dhalai, and Khowai rivers have increased during the past day. These rivers may rise rapidly over the next 24 hours before beginning to recede on the second and third days.

In northern Bangladesh, the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers have recorded rising water levels over the past 24 hours. While levels are expected to remain stable during the next day, authorities anticipate that they will begin to recede thereafter.

Residents and travelers are being advised to monitor local weather forecasts and updates from the Bangladesh Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre and the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, and to follow the guidance of local authorities as weather conditions continue to evolve.
